Our liver is an amazing organ. We can’t live without it. Our liver performs over 500 separate functions in the body, including breaking down toxins, detoxifying (cleansing) the blood, producing hormones and other substances needed by the body, digesting and metabolizing fat, carbohydrates and protein, and storing and releasing energy.
It also serves as one of the most important supports for our immune system. It detects bacteria, viruses and other harmful microorganisms that enter our bodies through our gut.
We can overwhelm our liver by eating too much sugar and saturated fat, not exercising enough, not getting enough sleep, and of course, drinking too much alcohol.
So, what can we do to boost our liver so that it can help defend us against viruses, bacteria, and combat oxidants and free radicals? First, the basics: sleep, manage stress and anxiety, drink plenty of water, and eat a diet rich in plant-based foods. Herbs, fruits, nuts and vegetables can help rid the oxidants and free radicals lingering in our body.
The next step is too arm yourself with supplements. Ginger is an herbal powerhouse that offers many significant health benefits, including helping to detox our livers. There are recent studies, including a 2016 study that was published in the National Institute of Health’s Library of Medicine, that showed that 12 weeks of 2 grams of daily Ginger supplementation resulted in a significant reduction in some fatty liver indicators, including inflammatory markers.
Lucky for us, Ginger is readily available, so we can proactively reduce possible liver inflammation. And we can do it in so many delicious ways!
